“A Friendly Reminder”

Welcome back to Sunday nights.
6 months since we’ve been together on a Sunday night. 27 weeks.
Praying through this, I understand this is the Sunday evening crowd.
Deuteronomy 6:1-9.
What’s happening in Deuteronomy?
Moses is writing to the Israelites as they are about to go into the Promised Land.
After 40 years of wandering. 40 years of journeying and being without a land… they are moving into their promised land. A picture of victory for the New Testament believer.
Deuteronomy 1:6-8 - The Lord told them to go into the land and possess it.
Deuteronomy 1:9-18 - God allowed Moses to set up judges and leaders to help manage people.
they were as many as the stars in heaven.
Deuteronomy 1:19-4
They (verse 32) didn’t believe the Lord their God
Deuteronomy 2-3 - this is all about their journey
Deuteronomy 4 - Last call to obey
Deuteronomy 4:1 - “Listen to the statues and the rules… that you may live… and go in and take possession of the land...”
Deuteronomy 4:6

. This book does not contain a new Law, it is a second stating of the original Law.

We list here several of the key words of this book and the number of times they are found in the King James Version: land (153); inherit (36); possess (65); hear (44); hearken (27); heart (46); love (20). Putting these repeated words together, we can quickly see the emphasis of the book: you will go in and possess the land if you hear God’s Word, love Him, and hearken (obey). If we love God, we will obey Him; and if we obey, He will bless.

Deuteronomy 5 - Moses restates the law.
The first 6 chapters are reminders from Moses to a new generation of Israelites that are about to go into a place of prepared victory.

Outline:

1. Depend on the Word

verses 1-3
Moses spent the first 5 chapters REMINDING the people of how God led them. And also how God gave them a law to follow.
Deuteronomy 6:1 KJV 1900
Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:
It’s extremely interesting to me that God sent His law to the people when they were in the desert.
Some people rely heavily on God when things are tough.

The Word is just as important to us in the valley as it is in the victory.

Why is God’s Word so important?

a) The Word Reveals our Need

The law that God gave in the Old Testament was what Israel was supposed to follow.
The law is like a mirror to show us our need.
It points to the one that
Psalm 19:7–9 KJV 1900
The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.

b) The Word Leads to Victory

end of verse 1 -
Deuteronomy 6:2 KJV 1900
That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.
The Land.
Psalm 119:10–11 KJV 1900
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, That I might not sin against thee.
The grandsons.

The greatest victory that you can ever give your children is not a state championship trophy. The greatest victory that you can give you children is a life marked with obedience.

2. Develop Your Worship

Deuteronomy 6:4–5 KJV 1900
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
“Love for God and God’s love for the people” is a new theme in Deuteronomy (4:37; 6:4–6; 7:6–13; 10:12; 11:1; 30:6, 16, 20). While the previous books certainly speak of love and prove God’s love for Israel, Deuteronomy emphasizes this theme as never before. The word “heart” is also important: the Word must be in their hearts (5:29; 6:6); sin begins in the heart (7:17ff and 8:11–20); and they must love God from the heart (10:12). In other words, Moses makes it clear that blessings come when the heart is right. In order for the people to possess and enjoy the land, their hearts had to be filled with love for God and His Word. Love - a word many Americans misuse.
Feelings are a part of love.
But ultimately love is a choice. It’s an action. It’s about service, and selflessness.
I love Hailey Crompton
Through marriage you really begin to learn so much about someone.
I knew early that she was special. But the reason that i choose to love her everyday is because I get the unbelievable privilege of knowing her.
Love has a lot to do with KNOWING and then RESPONDING.
I am concerned… I am very concerned that many people inside churches claim that they “love” Jesus, but do not know the first thing about Him.
How do I suggest I examine and develop my love for Jesus?

a) Recognize Him

Deuteronomy 6:4 KJV 1900
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:
This verse is the confession of the jewish people. they would often recite it.
One Lord -
Hebrew for that word is “echad”
It speaks of compound unity.
Genesis 1:5 - evening and morning were the firstday - unity in firstday.
Genesis 2:24 - two become one flesh
This word
the statement the LORD is one certainly does not contradict the truth of the Trinity. In fact, it establishes that truth.
Here’s my point: We can only love what we know.
WHo is our God?
Our God is - Triune
Our Father is:
Our Lord Jesus is: Shepherd, the image of the invisible God, the

b) Respond to Him

3. Discipline Your Walk

Deuteronomy 6:7 KJV 1900
And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.
Teach your kids
Deuteronomy 6:10–12 KJV 1900
And it shall be, when the Lord thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildedst not, And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
DOn’t forget when you find blessings.

Conclusion

Cornell Psychiatrists - 53 % to 47 %
The end of their lives 84% to 16% regret inactivity.
It’s not too late to start teaching your kids about Jesus.
God’s Grace is bigger than your wayward kid’s sin.
Are you taking steps to recognize and then respond on a daily basis to Jesus?
